Manchester United vs Leeds LIVE highlights and reaction as Bruno Fernandes scores hat-trick – Manchester Evening News

Manchester United began their season with an outstanding 5-1 win over Leeds on Saturday.

The atmosphere was electric at Old Trafford as a full capacity crowd finally returned, which made it the perfect occasion to unveil new signing Raphael Varane before kick-off – the Frenchman’s entrance to the pitch increased the noise to yet another level.

United started well and looked lively and they took the lead in the first half thanks to Bruno Fernandes, who benefitted from a sublime pass from Paul Pogba. The pair weren’t going to stop there, though, as they soon delivered world-class performances.

Although Leeds stunned United after the break with a Luke Ayling delight from distance, United were quick to bounce back.

Goals from Greenwood and another two from Fernandes meant they went 4-1 up and they were running riot over Leeds.

Unlikely scorer Fred even got amongst the action and it was Pogba again who assisted. The Frenchman created four goals in total which means he’s already surpassed his total of three league assists from last season – he was monumental today.

A recap of United’s 5-1 win over Leeds at Old Trafford.

Manchester United player ratings: Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba great vs Leeds

David de Gea

Saved well from Mateusz Klich at 0-0. Could do nothing about Luke Ayling’s howitzer. 7

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Did not offer enough again and was caught on his heels when he should have been further forward. 6

Victor Lindelof

Solid performance and showcased his distribution by finding Fernandes for United’s fourth. 8

Harry Maguire

Slightly slow in emerging to block Ayling’s strike but that is nit-picking. Did little wrong and a secure presence. 7

This has been a dream start for United

United couldn’t have started their Premier League season any better.

Their energy in the first half ensured they seized the initiative and their world-class quality on the ball has put Leeds to the sword. Superlatives won’t do Pogba’s and Fernandes’ displays justice.

It’s the Pogba and Fernandes show today

It’s all about Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes. Mentioned them both in the first-half and they are really turning the screw now. If United are to win the title it will rely on them both contributing world-class displays on a regular basis, they certainly look up to the challenge.

Awful chants coming from Leeds’ fans

Leeds fans sang the Munich chant en masse just then, many doing the airplane gestures. It has been years since that chant was heard so loudly here and it is no surprise that Leeds fans have aired it so audibly. A Leeds staff member sat in the press box shook his head in disbelief and disgust.

No changes from United at the break

No changes for United at the break, but it might only take until the hour mark before we see them. Matic and Sancho would be sensible switches, one to sure up the midfield battle and one to add some extra quality into an attack which is lacking balance.

Half-time!

That’s half-time.

United will be delighted with that display at the break.

Greenwood has caught the eye and oozed quality

Mason Greenwood looks so effortless on the ball again and is playing in a derby match with the same fearless approach which saw him shine so brightly at youth level. He started through the middle, has drifted to the right and could even end up playing on the left if Martial comes on later.

42′ – MAN UNITED 1 – 0 LEEDSSteven Railston

McTominay can’t get his header on target

United work the corner well to the back post, but McTominay can’t get his header on target.

It’s been an excellent first half.

Southgate will be loving Shaw’s display

It has been a breathless afternoon. United have been terrific. Enterprising, threatening and incessant.

They deserve to be ahead and some players have grown into the game after starting quietly. A United fan savoured the goal so much he started filming the crestfallen Leeds analysts. Gareth Southgate is here and must love what he’s seeing from Luke Shaw. He is more a left winger than a left-back these days.

CHANCE!

Shaw, with his usual energy down the left side, creates an opening for United.

James gets his shot away but it’s wide.

It’s only a matter of time before United score again at this rate
