Garth Crooks compares Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood to Manchester United greats – United In Focus – Manchester United FC News

Manchester United’s win over Leeds on Saturday was a stirring performance which lit up Old Trafford.

The plaudits keep on coming for United’s players after the 5-1 victory over rivals Leeds, with the team laying down a statement for the rest of the season.

Three Manchester United players were named in the BBC Sport team of the week. Hat-trick hero Bruno Fernandes, four-assist star Paul Pogba, and young forward Mason Greenwood.

BBC pundit Garth Crooks, who made the selections, reserved particularly high praise for Pogba and Greenwood.

Lofty comparisons

Crooks compared Pogba to Sir Bobby Charlton, while also calling for more consistency from the Frenchman.

The analyst said: “He literally cut Leeds to ribbons in a display of precision passing I’ve not seen at Old Trafford since the likes of Bobby Charlton. But therein lies the problem with Pogba. You get all or nothing with him – unlike the great Charlton.”

Pogba’s four assists was a rare feat – done only seven times in the Premier League era – and it outdid his tally of three league assists last season. The win over Leeds showed what he is capable of and it is right to call on him to produce more regularly.

Crooks also compared Mason Greenwood to a trio of former United strikers, including Denis Law. He said he was very impressed with the way he got on the scoresheet.

He said: “I’ve seen Denis Law, Frank Stapleton, Mark Hughes and Andy Cole lead the line for Manchester United, but not at 19. I can’t decide if the game has got easier or Greenwood’s got better. What I do know is the teenager took his goal brilliantly.”

Keep calm and carry on

United were terrific on the opening day of the season and the team need to carry that on, without getting carried away.

Home advantage worked in our favour on Saturday but two away games follow. Only two teams won away from home out of 10 matches on the Premier League opening weekend.

United travel to Southampton next Sunday and then Wolves a week later.

If the team play this well again there will be no problem. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just has to make sure the side can keep the standard up.

Two seasons ago United beat Chelsea 4-0 on the opening day of the season, and then followed it up with one draw and one defeat. United need to ensure that does not happen again.
